In my senior year, I visited men at the Bronx House of Detention. I had never been in a prison or jail, but people in East Harlem were dealing with these places and the police all the time. This experience truly turned my life around.

Saudi Arabia beheads Indonesian worker despite Jokowi’s pleas for clemency

Saudi Arabia has beheaded an Indonesian migrant worker for murder despite President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s repeated pleas that the man be granted clemency.

M. Zaini Misrin from Bangkalan, East Java, was executed on Sunday, according to Migrant Care, an Indonesian organization focusing on the welfare of Indonesian migrant workers.

Zaini, who worked as a driver, was sentenced to death on Nov. 17, 2008, after being found guilty of murdering his employer, Abdullah bin Umar Munammad Al Sindy. He was arrested on Jul. 13, 2004.

Migrant Care suspected that the 53-year-old Bangkalan resident had been forced to confess to the murder.

The group further claimed that Zaini did not receive legal assistance during his trial and was only accompanied by a translator believed to be complicit in forcing him to confess to the crime he claimed he did not commit.

“Saudi Arabia also did not notify Indonesia [about the execution] either through the consulate general in Jeddah or the Foreign Ministry," the group said in a statement released on Monday.


President Widodo requested clemency for Indonesians on KSA's death row on three occasions


The quality of mercyThe Indonesian Foreign Ministry confirmed the execution and Migrant Care’s claim that it was not notified by Riyadh beforehand about Zaini’s beheading.

President Jokowi has requested that Zaini and other Indonesians on death row in Saudi Arabia be granted clemency on at least three occasions: During his visit to  Riyadh in September 2015, during King Salman’s visit to Jakarta in March 2017 and through a letter sent to the Islamic kingdom in November 2017.  

The Indonesian Consulate General in Jeddah had also requested that Zaini’s case be reviewed and a reinvestigation was conducted between 2011 and 2014, according to Migrant Care.

The legal efforts, however, failed to overturn his conviction.

Migrant Care: Death Execution against Zaini Misrin in Saudi Arabia Violates Human Rights

Saudi Arabia has executed death sentence against Zaini Misrin, Indonesian migrant worker from Bangkalan, Madura East Java, Sunday (3/18/2018) at 11 am local time.

According to the statements of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, the authorities of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia did not inform about this execution (submitting mandatory consular notification) to the representatives of the Republic of Indonesia.

The execution of Zaini Misrin is considered a form of human rights violation.

Zaini Misrin said he was forced to admit to killing after suffering pressure and intimidation from Saudi authorities. In court proceedings until being sentenced to death penalty, Zaini Misrin also did not get a neutral and impartial translator.

In this regard, Migrant CARE with the Indonesian Migrant Workers' Union, the Migrant Worker Network and the Human Rights Working Group will stage protests against the execution by Saudi Arabia against migrant workers from Indonesia who have acted unjustly to the workers.

The protests of humanitarian activists will be delivered through the mass media in today's press conference at the office of Migrant Care, Cempaka Putih, East Jakarta.

This protest aims for all law enforcement parties everywhere in this world to obey, respect and honor the Human Rights which have been agreed with the United Nations (UN).

"We invite journalist friends to attend the Press Conference Addressing the Dead Execution against Zaini Misrin," said Migrant Care Director, Wahyu Susilo.

Taberon Honie was convicted of the murder of his ex-girlfriend’s mother in 1999. North Texas jury sentences killer to death penalty for shooting Burleson woman, cop

A jury of 12 Johnson County residents voted Thursday to send 31-year-old Jerry Elders to death row for the murder of Robin Waddell, agreeing with prosecutors who requested the death penalty. Alabama approves second nitrogen hypoxia execution

The Alabama Supreme Court has authorized the nitrogen hypoxia execution of Alan Eugene Miller, setting the stage for the state to have at least four executions this year. Miller's execution would be the second carried out using nitrogen gas, the Alabama Attorney General’s office says. Miller, now 59, was convicted of killing three people during a pair of 1999 workplace shootings in suburban Birmingham. He was living in Autauga County at the time.
